Lily Loves George Cafe

I have long been searching for a Blackburn café that I can call my favourite. One that has fantastic food, coffee and service... The trifecta. Well, now I think my quest is over after a visit to Lily Loves George. Situated away from Blackburn’s main cafe precinct on South Parade, Lily Loves George is a popular café which is really quite petite. The good news is that they are now taking bookings on Saturday. The interior featured vintage wares, Beano and Dandy annuals perched on random shelves and gypsophila in bottles on each table.

WHAT’S ON THE MENU?
·        Soft Shell Crab Burger with yuzu pickled vegetables, chilli mayo and thick cut chips ($17.00)
·        Coconut and almond chia pudding with fresh fruits, tapioca pearls and toasted coconut ($13.00
·        Pulled pork baguette with apple Asian slaw and wasabi mayo ($15.00)
·        Man-wich – bacon, egg, house made hash brown, cheese and BBQ sauce ($11.00)

WHAT WE ATE...
The menu consists of breakfast items, burgers and salads but they also have some smaller items in their glass cabinet. I decided to have the ‘Salt and Pepper Calamari with rocket, fennel, orange and basil aioli ($16.00)’. If you have found calamari rubbery in the past, then I strongly suggest that you visit Lily Loves George and order this dish. The calamari was so tender and moreish! The salad element was refreshing and the aioli tasted fabulous too. A wonderful dish that I hope to have again.

My dining companion opted for the ‘Dukkah Eggs – two poached eggs on toast with smashed avocado, mint, fetta, lemon and dukkah spices ($16.00)’. The crusty bread and the luscious avocado blend complimented the perfectly cooked eggs. The dukkah provided just enough spice without overwhelming the dish.

WHAT WE DRANK...
If you are feeling like a bit of decadence, you can have a salted caramel or a white chocolate milkshake ($6.00) or perhaps a ‘Hot and Cold hot chocolate with ice-cream and cream ($5.50)’. My latte ($3.50) made with Toby’s Estate’s Woolloomooloo Blend was superb with notes of chocolate and caramel.

SERVICE...
