White Rabbit Restaurant

When I think of the White Rabbit, I am automatically thrown back into the world of Alice in Wonderland... I must have been quite fond of the story as I named my childhood cat Dinah after one of the Liddell’s cats (Caroll based the main character on Alice Liddell) and more recently named my cat Villikens after their other cat. Anyway, I’ve been to the White Rabbit in Brighton a number of times for family get-togethers and have found the food to be delightful.

Are you ‘curiouser and curiouser’ about the menu? Well, there is the ‘Brioche French Toast with banana and peanut butter ice-cream, pancetta crisps, salted caramel peanuts and Canadian maple ($18.90)’ or the ‘Pork and Pistachio Lyonnaise sausage, spicy beans, fresh herbs, poached eggs and pear relish ($18.90)’ for you to try.

The White Rabbit also has pizzas so we decided to split a pizza between us. We went with the ‘Mixed mushrooms, ricotta, roast garlic, rocket, and truffle oil ($19.50)’. I’ve had this before and really loved it but this time it was nowhere near as pleasing. The pizza still had a lovely thin base that I have enjoyed in the past but the astringent tomato sauce was very overbearing. A bianca base would be a better carrier for these delicate ingredients.

My dining companion ordered a latte ($3.50) and found it to be alright, but not great.

The service was much better than I have experienced in the past but I would probably try a different cafe along Church Street next time I am in Brighton...

The Hidden Cafe

We decided to have afternoon tea in Camberwell and thought we would try out The Hidden Cafe. This is not to be confused with the Hidden Cafe in Chadstone that I reviewed some time ago, which I think has now ceased to exist... However, this cafe is also delightfully hush-hush. The Hidden Cafe resides behind St Mary's Anglican Church in Toorak Road in what used to be the church hall. It has been transformed into a gloriously light and inviting cafe that is also very child friendly with a children’s play area and kids menu. If the kids need to burn off some energy from a sugar hit at the cafe, there is a playground in the park next door...

I studied the menu for future reference and it displayed some appealing options. The savoury muffin of the day was also quite tempting indeed. We had just enjoyed a rather big lunch so we only ordered beverages this time. I decided to have an iced chocolate ($5.00). The iced chocolate had the ideal ratio of chocolate, milk, and ice-cream. Some cream on top and it would have been perfect. The quality, orange striped straw was also a nice touch.

My dining companion ordered a latte ($3.60) made with Gridlock Coffee. This was excellent and I am keen to try one myself next time I visit...

Oktoberfest at South Wharf Promenade

Last Saturday was Oktoberfest at South Wharf Promenade. They were blessed with a sunny spring day although the frisky wind did play havoc with the signage and my hat!

We kicked off the festival with some beer and pretzels at the Munich Brauhaus. I opted for 500ml of Furstenberg Pils ($10.50) whilst my thirsty festival companion chose 1 litre of the Lowenbrau Original ($19.50). The Munich Brauhaus is styled like a Bavarian hunting lodge with a twist and is the perfect place to celebrate Oktoberfest in Melbourne all year round.
Of course, no festival is complete without some music! Entertainment was provided all along the Promenade and included some German slap dancers, an accordionist, and The Frank Charles Big Band.

As well as pretzels, there were a lot of sausages and sauerkraut to try. At the Melbourne Public Bar, you could either choose an ‘Aussie Dog’ or a ‘German Dog’. We tried the ‘German Dog’ of bratwurst and sauerkraut with mustard which certainly had a kick to it.

In the Bier Garden Marquee, we enjoyed some more beer... Gena Rose Bruce entertained festival goers as they relaxed in the Marquee. Later, Oktoberfest ambassador, Byron Finnerty from MasterChef, appeared for a Q&A and later helped with the Keg Tapping with fellow MasterChef winner Brent Owens.

 The festival did get a little hazy towards the end but my lovely festival companion helped me home...
