Laksa King

It’s been ages since I have had a laksa so I thought a trip to the Laksa King seemed like the obvious solution. The Laksa King is positioned in a beautiful area of Flemington with lovely old houses and tree lined streets. We thought we might have to book a table but we arrived just after noon and had no problem finding a table. Things did start to get really busy later though so don’t leave it too late!

We ordered some Chinese Tea which cost only $0.60 per head. Much better value than HuTong Dumpling Bar which charge $3.00 per head. Now feeling refreshed, we started with some Roti with satay sauce ($6.80). The roti was tasty and not too greasy which can be a problem with roti sometimes. The satay sauce was quite sweet but also delicious.

Now, for the laksa... I narrowed it down to two choices: The ‘Vegetarian curry laksa ($9.80) with mixed seasonal vegetables and tofu’ which is also vegan friendly and the ‘Combination curry laksa ($9.80) with mixed noodles, shrimp, fishcake and chicken’. I decided to have the Combination curry laksa. This was absolutely the best laksa I have ever had. A gigantic bowl of a very flavoursome broth that was nice and spicy. It was full of noodles and I loved the additional pillows of luscious tofu and creamy eggplant. The roti helped to cool my mouth when needed.

My friend chose the Scallop curry laksa ($14.50). This was even better than my laksa. It was jam-packed with lots of juicy scallops and I think I will give this laksa a go next time...

The service was super friendly and we felt very welcomed. We left the Laksa King full of delicious Malaysian cooking and definitely needed to burn it off with a walk around the gorgeous backstreets...

Marysville Patisserie

One of my favourite daytrips is to Marysville but strangely enough I had never been to Marysville before the bushfires devastated the area. The scenic drive from Healesville through the Black Spur is so beautiful and lush with foliage and tree ferns. This time we thought we would have lunch at the Marysville Patisserie. The patisserie was rebuilt after the bushfires and is bright and cheerful inside with outdoor seating also available under the wide verandah. Unfortunately no table service is provided here so you have to get up and down a lot. Most things on the menu are $18.50 and there is a wide range of cakes and fudge available too. Menu items include ‘Homemade gourmet pie with salad and chips’ ($18.50) and ‘Grilled Scotch fillet steak sandwich with caramelised onions served with lettuce, tomato and seasoned chips’ ($19.50). We started with some lattes. At $4 you would think that the coffee would be brilliant... but sadly it was pretty bad. They were both boiling hot and had a strong burnt taste. Our food took a long time to arrive even though it was pretty quiet. I decided to have the Homemade Salmon and Leek Quiche with salad ($15.50). This was a generous wedge of plump quiche that had a delicious filling. The accompanying salad of leaves and tomato had a very yummy wholegrain mustard dressing.


My friend chose the Angus Beef Burger with lettuce and tomato relish, salad and chips ($18.50). He thought the burger was a bit on the bland side. The chips were spicy but lacked salt.


Although our lunch was hit and miss, I think next time I am in Marysville I will try Fraga’s Café...

Madame Sousou

Bonjour my lovely readers! After a stroll around the Fitzroy Market, we thought we would enjoy some brunch at Madame Sousou. The breakfast menu is a great way to experience this sophisticated French bistro for a lower price. Then again, the dinner menu has a very tempting selection too... Well, to solve this conundrum perhaps try both menus...

We had a couple of luscious lattes ($3.50) to start with whilst we studied the menu. Some delightful dishes from their breakfast menu include Sweetcorn and zucchini fritters with smoked salmon, avocado salsa, and horseradish crème ($18.00) and French crêpes with lemon curd and fresh raspberries ($16.00). I felt like some hollandaise so I chose the ‘œufs Van Dieman’ - poached eggs on an English muffin with Tasmanian smoked salmon and tarragon hollandaise sauce ($16.00). Although a simple dish, it was executed to perfection. The tarragon hollandaise was brilliant and even the muffin was beautifully toasted. It really showed that they put that little bit extra of love and care into their food.

My friend was keen to have some brioche so picked the Croque Madame Sousou - toasted brioche with ham, cheese and a fried egg ($15.00). This was also flawless and very scrumptious.

The service was lovely and efficient and they habitually replenished our glasses of water. So if you fancy a trip to Paris without the hefty airfare, Madame Sousou ‘can-can’ provide a delicious alternative...

Crew Café

I trekked out to Berwick the other day to visit some of my lovely cousins. We met at their favourite local café for lunch. The Crew Café is tucked away behind the main street. They have an extensive menu and it is very well priced.

Here is what we ate:

Tandoori Chicken Salad – marinated chicken breast fillet resting on mixed salad, diced cucumbers, tomato and Spanish onion with a yoghurt dressing ($16.50)

Everyone enjoyed their meals. My latte ($3.50) was great... well they both were, I had two... Each came with a mini amaretti biscuit. The waitresses were friendly and table service was provided. We had a delightful day catching up over lunch at this great local treasure.

Cocoa Moon Café

I will let you in on a little secret... Cocoa Moon Café is by far the best place to go for coffee in Warrandyte. Their food and service is also brilliant, which definitely makes for a winning combo. There are a wide range of breakfast and lunch options such as gourmet burgers, risotto, pancakes, and patatas bravas. You can also get your macaron fix here with a variety to choose from. We both decided to have sandwiches today, which are served with either salad or chips. I went with the ‘Roast chicken, lettuce, cucumber, and homemade mayo’ ($9.90) sandwich, toasted on white bread with chips. This was absolutely delectable and was in fact a triple-decker sandwich! With beautifully moist chicken, the sandwich was very yummy. The crispy, rustic potato wedges were so great! A pot of aioli for the wedges made them very moreish.

My friend chose the ‘Smoked salmon, cream cheese, cucumber, and lettuce’ ($11.90) sandwich, fresh on white bread with salad. This was also sandwiched between three slices of bread. My friend very much enjoyed this meal too, although would probably pick the chips instead of the salad next time.

My latte ($3.80) arrived in a red, ceramic tumbler that was very big indeed. It was so deliciously creamy that I could have easily had another one. The lovely waiters provided very efficient table service and were swift to clear empty plates and cups. A fantastic café that I highly recommend you try next time you are visiting Warrandyte.

Manchester Press

All this talk of bagels lately in foodie circles has made me desperately crave one. Therefore on my lunch-break today I headed over to Manchester Press. Manchester Press is located down the end of Rankins Lane, on the right hand side. Just look for the sign with ‘MP’.

It is an oasis from the hustle and bustle of the city and is a great place to unwind. The menu contains all-day breakfast, toasted bagel, and salad options. From the breakfast menu, I liked the sound of the ‘Fruit and nut bagel topped with mixed berry mascarpone, strawberries and pistachio dust’ ($12.00). However, I felt like something savoury today. With so many lovely flavour combinations, I found it difficult to decide. I narrowed it down to two. The ‘Thick sliced pastrami with sliced tomato, sauerkraut and swiss cheese and thousand island dressing’ or the ‘Avocado, fetta, chilli and mint smash with cherry tomatoes, roquette and pine nuts’ ($13.00). I eventually ordered the avocado bagel. You have some choices regarding the type of bagel including wholemeal, plain, and sesame. I chose a poppy seed bagel. What a scrumptious delight this was! It was also unbelievably filling... A mountain of the avocado smash with just the right amount of mint topped my bagel. This also came with a side salad. I absolutely loved this dish!

My latte ($3.50) was very delicious. They obviously know what they are doing... The staff were very attentive and provided faultless service. I very much enjoyed my lunch at Manchester Press and plan on spending more of my lunch-breaks here in the future.
