Omah's

Omah’s is a Malaysian restaurant near the Glenferrie and Burwood Road intersection in Hawthorn. They specialise in mud crab and on Monday they have mud crab night where you can enjoy a three course crab feast for $45.00. They also have a junior menu of five dishes ($8.90) so you can bring the kids along as well. The restaurant is stylish and modern with decorative screens creating individual dining spaces and stylized bird cage lighting.

WHAT’S ON THE MENU?

·        Yam Scallop x 2 – Pan seared fresh scallop served on yam cake with house mayo ($8.50)

·        Omah’s Duck – Half a deboned duck braised in soy and Chinese herbs and served with bok choy ($21.90)

·        Pandan Leaves Crab – Whole mud crab wok fried and coated with pandan leaves, lemongrass and tamarind in a light curry paste sauce ($ Market price)

WHAT WE ATE...

We ordered two entrees to share. The ‘Crab Omelette served with garlic chilli sauce ($7.50)’ was delicate in flavour and the sauce packed a punch.

The ‘Roti served with peanut sauce ($7.00)’ was flaky and ideal for mopping up the spicy peanut sauce.

I decided to have the ‘Fried Kueh Teow ($11.90)’. The flat rice noodles fried in dark soy with prawns, egg, fish cake, bean shoots and a touch of spice were superb. I could taste the essence of the wok and the ingredients were just the right ratio.

My dining companion chose the ‘Five-spice calamari ($21.90)’ which tasted lovely but had the odd slightly chewy piece of calamari.

WHAT WE DRANK...

Omah’s has a good selection of drinks to choose from. I was tempted by the Hix Pilsner ($9.90) but in the end we shared a jug of Tiger beer ($18.00).

SERVICE...

The service was very quick but as we dined on a Wednesday night, the place was quite uninhabited when we arrived.
