WHAT’S ON THE MENU?

·         Sauteed Wild Mushrooms with truffle infused butter, served on toasted brioche, shaved ricotta salata ($16.50)

·         Apple Crumble Ricotta Hot Cake with apple compote, vanilla bean mascarpone, topped with house made crumble ($18.00)

·         Sweet Potato Burger with crushed avocado, beetroot relish, bitter greens, tahini yoghurt and sweet potato fries ($19.90)

·         Slow-braised Beef Cheek with horseradish cauliflower puree and heirloom carrots ($22.00)

WHAT WE ATE...

I was looking for a light lunch so I picked the ‘Vegetable Pastie ($7.50)’ from the glass display cabinet. If I was wanting something bigger, I definitely would have ordered the Sweet Potato Burger as the one on the next table looked fabulous! Anyway, my pastie was really delicious with excellent pastry and a spicy, quality filling.

My dining companion chose the ‘Wagyu Beef Burger with short cut bacon, caramelised onion, house pickles, melted cheese, beetroot relish and beer battered chips ($20.50)’. The beetroot relish was a wonderful addition to the burger and overall the burger was brilliant. The chips with the aioli were also tasty…

WHAT WE DRANK…

Our lattes ($3.80) made with Toby’s Estate Coffee were delightful.

OVERALL…

We had just been to The Makers and Shakers Market at the Coburg Town Hall and were looking for a café around Pentridge. The first café looked very busy so we kept walking to The Boot Factory, which is part of the Pentridge Prison redevelopment. The café is actually located in the old building where prisoners used to make footwear, hence the name… I loved the interior with exposed brick walls and vintage pieces which expanded on the historic theme. A great cafe to try when you are in the area!
