Red Door Corner Store
Nestled in
a quiet, quaint neighbourhood in Northcote is the Red Door Corner Store. Back
in February, I thought I would make a trip north to check it out. We sat in the
window and found it a very pleasant place to watch the world go by. The menu focuses
on local, traceable and sustainable produce. Also, many items on the menu can
be modified to be gluten or dairy free, which is great if you have allergies. Vegans and vegetarians are also catered for. The Red Door Corner Store bakes all their cakes and
pastries themselves which is why they look so good.

WHAT WE ATE...
I was
drawn to the ‘Brioche French Toast, slow-roasted peach, strawberries, orange
custard, cinnamon, pistachio, vanilla crème fraîche ($16.00)’. The beautiful French
toast covered in petals not only looked wonderful, but was seriously yummy.
What I loved most about the dish was their restraint on sweetness. It was not
sickly sweet at all. The orange custard sandwiched between the slices of brioche
was fantastic just on its own, but the fruit, nuts, and crème fraîche made this
a truly magnificent dish.

My dining
companion picked the ‘Tart of the day which is served with a side salad ($13.00)’.
The tart flavour of the day was zucchini, artichoke and fennel. The filling was
very flavoursome and well seasoned. The green salad also matched the
high-quality of the tart.

WHAT WE DRANK...
If you
feel like a cool drink, there is the Mango, coconut nectar and lime smoothie
($5.50). Something hot? There is the Mörk Original Dark Hot Chocolate ($4.80)
for you to try. I ordered a Latte ($3.60) made with Proud Mary Coffee and Saint
David Dairy Milk. It tasted delightful and the coffee art was pretty cute too.

SERVICE...
The
service was very good and the waitresses did well manoeuvring orders between
the tables in the tight space.
