Auction Rooms
Is that a tree growing in the café? How wonderful! A
couple of months ago I visited Auction Rooms in North Melbourne. We were
greeted at the door and seated at our table straight away. Our waitress was
efficient but seemed a little distracted.
Back to the tree...Auction Rooms is a café and coffee roaster located in the old auction house building. The interior is industrial but interesting. From the tubular lights to the uneven floors. It would be lovely sitting in the atrium under the olive tree, coffee in hand...
We ordered some coffees ($4.00)... The Candyman espresso blend by Small Batch tasted amazing! It had a very different taste to other coffee blends I’ve tried but was just so scrumptious.
Their menu was exciting and unique with dishes such as ‘Seared rare kingfish with puffed rice, tamarind & smoked almond cream, grilled nectarine & a sous vide egg’ ($21.00) and ‘Saffron crostini with figs, ricotta & honeycomb’ ($14.00). I decided to have the ‘Seaweed & rice noodle salad with salmon gravalax, melon & shaved macadamia’ ($18.00). The fettuccini of seaweed made a lovely bed for the delicious salmon gravalax. The balls of cantaloupe and watermelon cut back the saltiness of the other elements. A superb creation.
My friend went with the ‘Gippsland grass-fed pastrami sandwich with onion jam & fennel slaw’ ($17.00). She was struggling to get through the meal but I thought it couldn’t possibly be that bad. I tried the sandwich and boy was I mistaken... The bread was like a lump of wood. So dense and dry, it was difficult to swallow. The pastrami was tough and overall the sandwich was very dry and unpleasant.
Pastrami Sandwich |
Auction Rooms is a great place to enjoy a marvellous coffee and perhaps try some interesting food. Just make sure you avoid the pastrami sandwich...
